The beach break called Halfway Kuta, offshore near the Hotel Istana Rama, is the best place to learn surfing. More challenging breaks are on the shifting sandbars off Legian, around the end of Jl Padma; and also Kuta Reef, 1km out to see off Tuban Beach.

Several shops on Jl Legian sell big-brand surf gear and surfboard. Smaller shops on the side streets hire out surfboard and boogie boards. And some can arrange transport to nearby surfing spots. Redz ( Jl Benesari) is a reputable operator for board rental.

Tubes Surf Bar it the surfers’ hangout. It shows surfing videos, and publishes a tide chart, which is widely circulated. Also keep an eye out for free surfing magazines.
